Indie Beauty Brands Shoutout

Of course we all know the popular beauty and makeup brands you can find at Sephora, Ulta or the drugstore, but what about Indie brands that don’t get as much attention? I follow a lot of natural, cruelty free, indie beauty brands on instagram and I am very intrigued but their products. I decided to create this monthly post where I will choose five of brands to feature. Here’s this month’s top five…

1. Shelby Naturals
she
I was obviously first intrigued by this brand because my name is Shelby. I thought it would be cool to have a product with my name on it. After keeping up with their instagram posts and browsing their website, I really loved their products. Shelby Ondrus, the creator of Shelby Naturals, is so passionate about creating clean, effective products and she also shares her knowledge via her Youtube channel.

2. Freck Beauty

Freck first grabbed my attention on instagram with their realistic faux freckles product. I love freckles and always wished I had some. The faux freckle trend became popular in the beauty community last year, so I thought it was genius that this brand created a product specially for that. Freck recently expanded into skincare with their range called the Cactus Collection. I hope to continue to see great things from this brand.

3. YLLO Beauty

YLLO Beauty is natural beauty for a cause. I appreciate beauty brands that also give back. Their products involve turmeric which is known to have positive effects on the skin. 10% of purchase proceeds go to Plan International Canada’s Hatibandha Project which helps to end child marriages in south Asian countries.

4. Sundays

Finding nontoxic, cruelty free nail polish can be a challenge. Sundays not only has their own line of polish, they also have two studios in New York City where you can get your nails done. They pride themselves on creating a nontoxic, clean environment for their clients. They are revolutionizing the nail industry because pretty much every nail salon around uses products that are toxic and not cruelty free.

5. Kai Fragrance

Like nail polish, clean, cruelty free fragrances are also hard to come by. Kai offers a range of bath, body, home, perfume and hygiene products that are infused with natural essences.

Dynamic Duo

Farmacy is one of my favorite skincare brands, if not my absolute favorite. I have a good variety of their products, but two that I find work so well together are the Skin Dew and Honey Drop.

I first start out by spraying my face with the Skin Dew and then moisturizing with the Honey Drop. Both products make my dry skin feel incredibly hydrated and moisturized without breaking me out. The Honey Drop is very light-weight and almost feels like a gel/cream hybrid. It doesn’t leave a thick, cream residue on my face with I like about it.

If you haven’t tried Farmacy’s products, I highly recommend them. The products are natural made with clean ingredients. You can get them at Sephora or on Farmacy’s website.

August Favorites

The Body Shop Banana Body Yogurt

2521345

This has been my go-to body moisturizer for Summer especially in August. The consistency of this is so cool. It literally looks like yogurt. It’s a gel based lotion that goes on so smooth and dries almost instantly. Lotions that dry fast are a must for me. I hate the feeling of lotion on my skin especially when I need to get dressed after applying. This is so light-weight and sinks into your skin fast. The smell is incredible as well. It smells just like banana pudding and the smell lasts on your skin for hours. When I apply it at night, I can still smell it the next morning. Personally, I like that.

Colourpop Crème Lux Lipstick in the shade Lay Over

Lay-over-2-a_800x1200

I love the Colourpop Luxe Lips formula and Lay Over has been my staple nude for Summer. Since I am pretty tan, I gravitate towards darker nudes. The formula is very unique. It’s almost feels like a creamy powder and it lasts on my lips for a while. At first I wasn’t keen on the formula, but the more I wore it, the more I realized it’s actually very cool.

Juice Beauty Oil-Free Moisturizer

11288163-1534566723746631

This August I decided to revisit an oldie but a goodie. I discovered Juice Beauty about a year ago and this moisturizer was my holy grail. I hadn’t used it in a while because my acne had cleared up. My acne started coming back at the end of July into August so I decided to try this again. This moisturizer is apart of their blemish clearing range and it definitely works. A little goes a long way because it is a rather thick formula. I love that this hydrates my skin and also treats my acne. Definitely a great clean, organic skincare option for fighting acne.

Too Faced Tutti Frutti Fruit Cocktail Blush Duo in the shade Cherry Bomb
m_5b89408ade6f62ac2e104c9b
I got this blush towards the end of August but it quickly became my favorite blush of all time. When Too Faced announced their Tutti Frutti collection, I was at first hesitant because Too Faced had been launching products left and right. I thought to myself, uhh another fruit collection. Their peach products were a huge hit but it seemed like people were getting tired of them. There was something about the Tutti Frutti collection that drew me in. I knew I had to try one of the blushes. I opted for the cherry blush because I thought it would transfer well into the autumn season. This blush is incredible. It gives your cheeks are beautiful cherry wine flush and the shimmer side acts as a highlighter that melts perfectly into the blush. I highly recommend these.

July Favorites

BECCA x Chrissy Teigen Endless Bronze & Glow
BC_92576_800x800_3
This highlighter has quickly become my favorite highlighter ever. It includes three shades, two highlighters and a bronzer. I swirl my brush through the whole pan and it gives me the most incredible, warm glow. It looks wet on my skin and it doesn’t accentuate texture. Some people were concerned that the bronzer would mix with the highlight and look weird. I can tell you, it doesn’t do that at all. I don’t want to say the bronzer get’s lost on your face, but the product definitely shows up as a true highlight.

Farmacy Clean Bee Ultra Gentle Facial Cleanser

bee

Farmacy skincare is my favorite skincare line. After trying some of their products and loving them, I made it my mission to try more. I had been using my Juice Beauty face cleanser and I felt like my skin was building up an immunity to it. I don’t know if you ever notice that after you use a product for so long, it seems to stop working. That may just be me. The Clean Bee cleanser is so light and clean. Farmacy uses all natural ingredients so I know my skin isn’t going to get irritated. This leaves my face feeling refreshed and hydrated.

Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lip in the shades Ocean Ave and Vitamin Sea

lips

The Ultra Blotted Lip formula from Colourpop is my favorite lip formula ever. I hate the feeling of lipstick on my lips. I have always been a chapstick or lip balm kind of girl. However, I love putting some color on my lips. This formula is like nothing else. I would describe the finish as if you had a ice pop and it stained your lips. It’s not an actual lip stain, it’s still considered a liquid lipstick, but the formula is so light and velvety. You have to try it for yourself. These two knew shades are stunning! The red shade, Ocean Ave, makes my lips look so healthy and cherry stained. Vitamin Sea is a beautiful warm nude and also makes my lips look so healthy.

Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronzer Perfect Tan in the shade Tantric 102
2
This bronzer is something special. It would say it’s like a smoothing powder and bronzer in one. It is expensive, but I definitely notice it looks different on my skin than my other bronzers. I got the darker shade because I currently have a tan. I wish Marc would release more shades because this shade is almost still too light for me.

“Natural” Beauty Products that are NOT Cruelty Free

We seem to think that “natural” beauty products go hand in hand with being cruelty free. However, there are many brands in the beauty industry that have tricked many of us. It is so important to always do your research and I’m here to help. Here’s some natural beauty brands who are not cruelty free.

My Favorite Cruelty Free Lip Balms

Lips balms are a staple in my makeup and skincare collection. Every night before bed, I like to put on a thick, lip balm or lip mask. My lips are always very dry, so lip balm is a must in my beauty routine. Here are top picks!

Sara Happ The Lip Slip Balm $24
1
The Lip Slip is one of my favorite balms. It is perfect for an overnight balm because it is thick and super hydrating. I actually wake up the next morning and it’s still on my lips. It has very fine shimmers in it, so you could wear it over lipstick for added dimension and shine.

Kari Gran Naked Lip Whip $20
2
I first heard about Kari Gran on Instagram. I love to discover natural, indie beauty brands and I came across the Lip Whip. They have the Lip Whip in different scents and even tints. Since I use balms before bed, I didn’t want a tinted color. I got the naked peppermint and it’s so nice. I keep this right on my night stand. It’s my current go-to.

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask $26
3
Bite Beauty is one of my favorite brands for lip products. This mask is so thick and smells amazing, exactly like agave syrup. This also comes in different tints, but my favorite is the clear.

Lanolips 101 Ointment Strawberry Multi-Balm $13.50
4
I love Lanolips’s products. Their lip products, balms and hand creams are awesome. Lanolips contains lanolin which is an oil that is extracted from wool. It is the closest oil that mimics our skin’s naturally produced oil. Lanolips acquires their lanolin in a cruelty free manner. Sheep need to be sheered regularly for their own well-being and comfort. Once their wool is sheered, the lanolin is extracted. Don’t worry, no sheep were harmed in the making of these products.

Glossier Coconut Balm Dotcom $12
5
Glossier is a well known brand in the beauty world. It seems like every influencer these days is promoting and raving about Glossier. I have to admit, I do enjoy the products I have tried, especially the balm dotcom. I like that this is a multi-purpose balm because I will use this around my mouth where I might get dry. Also on dry spots on my forehead.
